Weird Fucking Games Vol. 183: Favourites of 2024
Another year goes by and with it, some fantastic games
You’re reading a free issue of the Weird Fucking Games newsletter. To access even more content, become a paid subscriber!
Navigate through a maze of collaged images, collecting various items to give to the people within. As with other games by walkedoutneimans, the gameplay itself is not the point; rather it's to immerse yourself in the utterly bewildering and overwhelming atmosphere and aesthetic.
Snail Simulator (USD$1.99) by Small Solar Sloth Studios
Note: I received a copy of this game for free.
Snail around in what is very likely the world's first snail-themed MMO. Very cute, with some unexpected surprises and a small but thriving community.
Live out a harrowing week in your mutating apartment after being vomited on at a party. A wonderful body horror experience with a great atmosphere and fun combat.
Anthology of the Killer (USD$6) by thecatamites
thecatamites' horror comedy series is now available on itch.io and collected into one handy launcher with heaps of extras. Play as BB, an insurance salesperson and zine enthusiast who just so happens to live in a city haunted by a killer. Expect exceptional environmental storytelling, laugh-out-loud humour and an unforgettable cast.
Dryft City Kyngs (USD$19.99) by Nonsense Machine & magicdweedoo
Note: I received a copy of this game for free.
Race your way to the top to become the Kyng of Dryft City, while earning the respect of its denizens and fulfilling the obligations of your 9-5 job. Packed with plenty to do and customise, not to mention magicdweedoo's classic charm and humour.
TUMBEL by SHMIAM, SWEYET, SSSSSSS!
A bizarre game about multi-tasking. Lay the deceased to rest while preventing the flying cathedral from crashing, and keeping its sole passenger well-fed.
FRONTIERS OF THE MIND by MinusOnePublishing
An informative CD-ROM experience about MindMaze, a children's TV program that aired during the 80s & 90s. Learn about the unexplainable events that happened during the production of the show and theories behind it, presented in a delightfully nostalgic (and something disturbing) way.
South Scrimshaw (Part 1) by N. O. Marsh
A story about the life of a whale growing up in an alien ocean, presented as a nature documentary. Beautifully written and compelling, with some excellent art complementing its fantastic worldbuilding.
Cape Hideous (USD$5.99) by Jake Clover
Note: I received a copy of this game for free.
Explore a fantastical ship about to sail into a dangerous storm in this textless adventure that stokes the imagination. Jake Clover's rough-around-the-edges art style lends itself beautifully to the rich environmental storytelling of the characters and their lives upon the ship. Also featuring gorgeous sound design by magicdweedoo.
Housekeeping to Room 501 (USD$9.99) by taxicomics and Catladygames
Note: I received a copy of this game for free.
Tidy rooms in sinister hotel while discovering its secrets. A compelling simulator with spooks that inspire dread and never feel cheap.
